Major League Baseball has some of the biggest rivalries in all of sports. The length of the season, the long history of the teams and the passing down of team fandom from generation to generation lends itself to creating intense rivalries.

While it’s hard to pick the biggest baseball rivalries, the following five certainly rank among the best.

Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees

This is the biggest baseball rivalry and the biggest rivalry in all of sports. The longstanding feud between these two teams has led to classics such as Bucky Dent hitting a homerun to power the Yankees over the Red Sox in a one-game playoff in 1978 and the Red Sox coming back from being down 0-3 against the Yankees in the 2004 American League Championship Series. Even outside of New York City and Boston, people tend to pick a favorite in this rivalry.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. San Francisco Giants

Some consider this the biggest baseball rivalry, even bigger than Red Sox-Yankees. This feud started in New York City, where both teams played until they moved to the West Coast in 1957, breaking hearts in New York City. The two teams have been playing each other since the late 19th century, when Brooklyn went through names such as Bridegrooms, Grooms, Superbras, Robins, Trolley Dodgers and, finally, just Dodgers. The Giants were originally the New York Gothams before becoming the Giants in 1885.

Why Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants Moved

The rivalry has continued since the move to California and remains very even. The Giants have the edge in most wins and World Series titles (8-6), although the Dodgers have the most titles since the move to the West Coast (5-3). Remarkably, the two teams have never met in the postseason.

Atlanta Braves vs. New York Mets

A fairly recent addition to the list of big rivalries, but a good one, nonetheless. It’s got a bit of the “North vs. South” running through it. It intensified in the late 1990s when both teams (especially the Braves) were good. Today, the two teams battle against each other in the National League East. The controversial comments from Braves pitcher John Rocker that slammed New York and its residents in the 1990s contributed to the rivalry, as did suspicion on the part of Mets’ fans that pitcher Tom Glavine threw a game as a Mets pitcher because his loyalty still lay with  Atlanta, his former team. While more known for controversy and conspiracy theories, this rivalry can explode at any time.

Chicago Cubs vs. St. Louis Cardinals

Baseball passion is not just on the coasts. This Midwestern rivalry ranks among the fiercest in all sports. The Cardinals certainly have the edge in championships, with 11 to the Cubs 3 (and only one since 1908). But the two teams have played each other for so long, and both have such committed fan bases, that the rivalry has only deepened through the years.

Chicago Cubs vs. Milwaukee Brewers

This is a relatively new one among the biggest baseball rivalries, but it’s still intense. The Brewers moved to the National League in 1998, joining the Central Division with the Cubs. In recent years, the two teams have battled it out for the division championship or a wildcard position (along with the Cardinals, of course, who never go long without being good). In some ways, this rivalry is a natural. Just look at the Green Bay Packers vs. Chicago Bears in football. That’s one of the most intense rivalries in the NFL, and the Cubs and Brewers share much of the same fanbase.
