Johnny played his entire major league career with the Chicago White Sox. He led the American League in Stolen Bases in 1925 & 1926. In 1925 he also led the league in Runs Scored, Walks and Hit By Pitch. A formidable leadoff hitter, he was second to Indians’ first baseman George Burns in the voting for MVP in 1926. He was extremely fast and his peers considered him a great defensive centerfielder. Bill James, in his Historical Baseball Abstract, rates Mostil as having the fifth best range of any centerfielder in the history of the game. His career was short, comprised of basically six years, 1921-1926. Unfortunately, Mostil suffered from a nerve condition known as Neuritis, which eventually led in 1927 to a suicide attempt. He recovered and played for a couple more years but his performance never again approached the promise of 1925-26.
